I recently got a new vehicle - it's a VW Up! - small car but it's very fun to drive. I was wondering how possible it would be to fit a roof attachment for carrying kayaks to a car that doesn't have any factory designed roof bar things - so I searched around a bit and found the Thule website with its cool fitting guide that tells you what you can get after you've put in your car make and model details. Anywho, I got an answer from that but I just wanted to run the situation by you guys as well to get your opinion on it. Does anyone know how well these types of fittings that don't have very much to hold on to work?

A lot of the vw cars don't have bespoke fitting kits, they rely on wedging grips underneath the doors or windows. They seem to work (based on my friend having done it in a polo). They have to be wedged fairly tight and can damaged the paint work. I would be more concerned with the fact you car is pretty short and anything you tie on will probably be about 15 times the length of your car!

Nah it'll be grand! Just for a small car you'll have to be careful how many boats you tie on maybe 3 creekers or 4 playboats max. Like Tom says there mite be abit of superficial cosmetic scratches to the paint but nothing major

Yeah, I was thinking about doing the same. I have a Corsa, but unlike Pete’s Up! the Corsa has four bits (I’m not really sure how to describe them) that I’d imagine roof boxes/bars fit into. So I take it if I just go to Halford’s or somewhere else I can just get roof bars that slot into place?
And I was going to get some straps as well, so, any advice on what ones to get?

Corsa has the best roof rack system. Put the bars in the hole turn the key and boom bobs your uncle. I had the vauxhall ones for my corsa. Gul pretty standard roof rack straps. What ever you go for buy 5 mtr straps

Go to www.roofracks.co.uk and you can put in car details and it tells you what you need......then you can either buy there or go on eBay and try and buy them cheaper. Get thule though as they are bomber!

Just got myself some shiny PeakUK straps. Seem like pretty good quality like all Peak stuff but they also have a little elastic bit stitched on to them so you can roll them up and then stop them from unrolling. Nice little feature. £15 for 2x 5m and next day delivery

So, a couple of 5m straps is a good starting point. What Moon says about PeakUK straps - does that mean that the straps should specifically be from a kayaking company for some specific characteristic?

But halfords/b&q straps tend to be pretty crap, quite plasticy fabric that's prone to melting/wearing through easier.... in my experience anyways
