• The Freshers Fayre went really well this year and we got loads of sign ups, which resulted in around 60 matriculated members.
• The first major trip was RAD weekend, which is to improve member’s skills that joined the club last year. We stayed at Snow Goose Lodge, a new location that we hadn’t stayed in before, and the woman who owns it was very impressed with us. We had a great time kayaking and went on the Arkaig and the Lower Etive. Although we had a few injuries it was an amazing weekend.
• We also had many Fresher’s trips at the start of the year that were successful and we had many people attending. There may have been lots of swimming but it was good times.
• Our next big weekend was Fresher’s weekend away, which took lots of planning but it came together really well. We even managed to sort some unpredicted bus drama at last minute! There were very high levels, however we made the most of it and paddled two rivers (Upper Orchy and Grand Tully.) Big Thanks to all involved in organising it!
• Throughout the first semester there were also many advanced trips going on all the time.
Competition Secretary
• We organised SSS Slalom once again and we had around 50 people attending. Thanks very much to everyone housing the other clubs and taking everyone on a great night out. We also made our own poles this year and acquired stopwatches so now we have better kit for years to come.
• SCA Polo is starting for the B and C teams on the 6th of December, so can everyone please remember to come to training. There is also £15 fee for each polo player to help the club pay for SCA fees.
• There are lots of competitions coming up in second semester.
• At the start of February we have SSS Polo in Glasgow. This year it is outdoors in Pinkston instead of in the pool so although it may be a bit chilly there will be plenty of warmth provided. Of course the nights out in Viper and the Ceilidh will still be happening too. It is also cheaper than last year and we only have 30 spaces, so everyone get signed up quickly!
• The weekend after we have BUCS Slalom in Tees Barrage in Middlesbrough. We stay in a hotel and the weekend shall hopefully be mostly SU funded. We also hit the town of Middlesbrough both nights so it’s a great social event too.
• A bit later in the semester we’ll have NSR, the massive, freestyle kayaking event in Nottingham. The theme is rumoured to be Carnival this year however we’re waiting for more updates on the weekend.
• Later we also have SSS Whitewater, which is held at Grand Tully. Fergus won last year so it would be great to get more members attending this year. BUCS Polo is also happening too.
Gear and Safety Officer
• The Inventory was all sorted at the start of the year.
• A Few boats need repaired – Baxter, Hefe and the Polo Boats. Duncan is emailing Nomad about the polo boats and working on repairing the others.
• The padding has been getting fixed on all of the pool boats. If you notice any padding falling off or coming away just tell Duncan and he’ll get the handy duck tape out and patch it up.
• Some of our Polo Decks are still missing so if anyone knows the whereabouts could you please let us know.
• Dexter has also informed us that St Andrews still have one of our spray decks so we will make sure we get that back.
• Duncan attended the annual Safety meeting.
Social Secretaries
• There have been lots of social events so far this year.
• Starting after summer, we had a great first night out at Tom and Oban’s then the Union.
• Gaudie night at Davie’s was great success; there was definitely lots going on and many stories to tell afterwards.
• Our Fundraiser at the Union this year was Nuts & Bolts and we managed to raise £130. However we should come up with a better ticket selling strategy for future fundraisers.
• We also now have a monthly fundraiser called “Freefall” at South Tay Superstore. It’s great as we get 10% of Profits so we really need to persuade as many of our friends from outside the canoe club to come. We’ve had two so far although we need better attendance next time.
• In November we had our annual Quiz Night in Shrink to Fit (connected to Superstore.) It went well and we raised some more money for the club.
• Last week we had our Christmas Dinner, again at Superstore. The food was really good, the awards made by Sizer went down well and overall it was a great night. Superstore also gave us a 20% food discount so we ended up making £200 for the club.
• We just had our Bake sale at the library and we made £52.50. Thanks to everyone who helped out and made cakes.
• Coming up next semester we have: lads & ladies night, possibly another Union fundraiser, Paddy’s day pub crawl and maybe some new nights that we haven’t had before
Treasurer
• We’ve had some bank issues since the start of the semester, as Hannah hasn’t been able to access the bank because it’s taking ages to get the signatories changed. However, it’ll hopefully be fixed within the next few weeks.
• Financially we are good and have lots of money due to all the fundraisers that we’ve had going on and the matriculation money has now came through.
Vice Captain
• More people should try and visit the club website so that it appears when it is googled. The link will be going on up Facebook so have a look at it.
• Also everyone should make sure that they are on the forum as it is good way to sign up for trips and keep updated on other issues not posted on the Facebook page.
• Can SU Drivers please check the forum post related to them, as it needs to be signed off.
• There is a lot of merchandise getting organised at the moment.
• Club rash vests are getting made and Jordan is now getting names for people interested.
• We are also getting club calendars made this year that will be about £7/8.
• There are generic t-shirts getting made at the start of next semester and you’ll be able to choose your own custom colour for it.
• If you have any SU Kit Jordan can organise embroidery on it.
• Our charity of the year is the Tay Side Mountain Rescue Team so we’ll donate some of the money that we fundraise to them. This is a new thing as it is part of our club mark application.
• Another part of club mark is to take part in an outreach programme, so there will be a beach clean in Broughty Ferry at the start of next semester
• A Bag Pack has been booked at Tesco Riverside. However, the soonest we could get is November 2015, so we don’t have to think about that anytime in the near future!
• We will also be having another Bake Sale after Christmas.
Constitution
• There have been a few changes made to the constitution as requested by the SCA. There is now a dissolution clause, an appeals process if you get into trouble from the club and a few minor role changes. The constitution was passed around at the start of the meeting for everyone to read.
• Everyone is in favour to change the constitution.
Fresher Rep
• The nominees for fresher rep are – Davie Gow, Ross Dorward and Eilidh Morrison.
• Davie wins the majority vote and he is our new Fresher Rep!
Final Points
• The last pool sessions of the semester are Monday 8th and Thursday 11th of December and we start back up in semester 2 on the 19th January.
• There will be more river trips coming up next year. Freshers should also try and buy some of their own kit so they can keep warm whilst kayaking.
