Morning,
Following up from a few inquiries before and after the AGM, I am looking at setting up a level 1 course probably early summer. Basically it is an entry level coaching award that means you can assist a level 2 coach in planning and running lessons. It is a basic requirement for people that want to go and work in outdoor places such as PGL. It is generally run over the course of 4 days, generally split into 2 weekends. At present it requires as a pre-requisite:
A 2* award in kayak and canoe paddling
A foundation safety and rescue award (FSRT)
A first aid is not required, but recommended if you want to work in an outdoor centre
You will need to obtain each of these before attending the course, but we should be able to get them set up fairly cheaply if there is enough interest. Most of the level one coaches in our club did theirs with Steve Scott and Jim Gibson and we paid about £300 for the 4 days, which included food and accommodation. The SCA do provide funding up to 50% or £150 if you apply through sport scotland. It will be paid a few weeks after you have passed your assessment, meaning it would only cost you about £150.
At the moment, I just want to know who would be interested in going on one before I put the feelers out. The main bottleneck for us is open boat access, but we would be able to get some time over in Stirling or at Broughty Ferry.
You will need to be able to control an open boat and be able to teach a 5 minute lesson to your assessor.
If anybody is interested, please let me know
