There's a BCU safety weekend running from the 20th-22nd of march that i've heard about and am trying to get onto.
Anybody out there either allready going, or wanting to go?
For those that don't allready know about it,
THe pro's: you'll get 3 days of solid BCU standard coaching in aspects of river safety, procedures etc and get a chance to hit the less ducc abused white stuff along the way! A great chance to improve your skills outwith the clubs confines!
The con's: its in fort william, will cost some moneys.

I would advise anyone who is even thinking about going for Captain, Vice Captain or Gear and Safety or even anyone who getting into the stride of whitewater and wants to start to leading and develop their river skills to think strongly about going on this course. It is by far one of the best courses around for you to go on as it is orientated around student and UUUUUNAAAAAYYY clubs. It is also run buy some of the UK's top coaches. When Croucher, Bob and myself went on it two three years ago our course consisted of Day One - Personal Skill on the Orchy. Day Two - Leadership skills on the Etive Day Three - Rescue skills and swimming techniques (really good fun) on the Leven The con's: its in fort william, will cost some moneys. In previous years the club has subsidized pretty much all of the cost of this course and transport. All that that you've had to pay for before is is you accommodation. As I already said, this is a fantastic course. If you have any questions, give me, safety bob or croucher a shout.

What sort of whitewater ability/level do you have to be to go on it?? Alright Knoxy, This course caters for all levels, but to get the most out of it, you should be confident on class three and also have a reliable role on moving water. There will be occasions where the group will be running class 4, but you can run/portage at your discretion. I'd recommend if you do go on this course get a big volume boat(burn, h3,nomad, mamba etc) off a mate, it'll make your course a lot more enjoyable. Rich

I'll stick a video this evening of when we were at the course three years ago. It was quite low, but it'll give you an idea of what it was like.

The orchy was quite low but the etive was at a medium sort of level. Would this be the video of me going for a swim by any chance!! But yes its a great weekend and really develops what you have to keep an eye on when leading a river and how best to tackle problems that may occur on the river.
I felt it helped me take the next step up in terms of leading rivers.
