Hello Everyone!
As usual there is a plan to go out and have a wee evening paddle down stanley. Not sure about the time but shouldn't get on the river later than 7. Anyone interested? I will try to get some transport as usual!

Im not currently a memeber of the club..but I have just sent an email to the canoe@dunde... address, but thought I might as well post a comment here too. I have just finished 1st year at dundee and was wondering if i could join the club and do some trips over the summer? I have a 2 star and CST in kayaking.

Hi Aaron,
You are more than welcome to come and join us! Not sure who gets the "canoe@" emails, but here is the best place to get involved with our club.
I believe you are more than welcome to paddle on club organised trips, however you will not be covered by our insurance until you join in September. Also...just to warn you...all new-comers do have to complete a short safety test in September just to show you are competent (please don't be offended, its just to be safe).
So keep an eye on here, to join in on trips, but i would reccommend you source outside insurance prior to the start of term...or...hold fire until we are all back in Dundee and can get you affiliated.
(I believe the above is correct, but please can somebody correct me if not!!!)
Alex (Vice Captain)

I like the sound of that. I was wondering if I could come on the trip thats being advertised in this post? How does transport and equipment hire work in this club?

I have a 2 star and CST in kayaking. LOL.......Aaron, you're probably more qualified than 75% of folk in the club with your 2* and your CST...... Not saying I'm a fair weather paddler, but if the weather is good, I might be on for a quick blast down stanley myself.... As for transport, keep an eye on the post and see what happens by tuesday evening. Generally most of our members have got cars, so its a case of turning up at the store and giving the driver some petrol money. As for gear, I don't know what the story is these days for non club members, one of the current committee members will bring you up to speed there.

Yea, Alex is correct in his post... (As far as I'm aware anyway)
Transport is decided by the number of people going, we either get a minibus/people carrier from the sports union, or use cars.
Equipment hire is, for members anyway, you get given all you need on the river, and the cost of 'hiring' is included in the cost of the trip itself (It's not so much a hiring cost per say as paying for petrol and such.)
I'm not sure how it would work for non members, hopefully Rich or someone will notice this and be able to comment properly.
Sorry I can't be more help, but non members joining us for trips isn't something thats come up too often, certainly not during my time on the committee (or if it has I was asleep)
If no one comments on this by tomorrow ill bring it up at the meeting and find out more definite answers for you.

Alright, I asked;
the story is that you can go on any non club trips (so any that happen over summer until you join up in September, assuming you are.) However, you won't be covered by the clubs insurance, obviously, and you won't be able to use club gear, so you would either need to supply your own, or borrow someones personal kit.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no one else seems to want to. Hope this doesn't discourage you at all, but it does come down to accountability and all that.

Hello! will be nice to have a new member! thats all fine - as long as its not a 'club trip' also u can't get on the minibusses i believe :-( but are more than welcome in cars! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) do u have any of ur own kit? if u ask here im sure people wil lend u stuff, but as has already be said Im affraid we cant lend out club kit! its a shame we cant sign up members any time, but it has to be done through the sports union- who are away now. If u have any trouble getting gear sorted (which im sure u wont) then il see what i can doo next time im in Dundee. Hope to see u on a river soon! Right! Hijacking my thread!!! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Most has been said aaron and i'm not really knowing anything about these things. To get back about stanley this wednesday. I can't get the people carrier for this week because of some conference involving the sportsunion and some of their transports. So private cars only i suppose.

Aaron, why don't you join the club for the rest of the year? I reckon that would solve the whole problem. Suzy Mac, how bout you charge him 1/4 year membership until September. He doesn't need to do the safety test as it is only required by the Sports Institute, not our the Sports Union's insurance. If he Aaron shows that he's got his CST, I'd be happy to take him on the water and If he's a paid up club member till september, he can use club equipment. Problem solved.

Hm.. i don't know much but you can expect to have more trips during term time. That would mean at least once a week i guess? If you're into kayak surfing im sure you'll get a lot of that once Alan ist back.

The only problem, I think, is that the Sports Union is closed, so joining may be problematic. Assuming they'd even be agreeable to a member joining now. Would have to inquire.

The Sports Union was very open today but there is a conference going on and they are very busy. But its always worth a try to see if they have time!

mmmmmm..... not sure that is right - id be more than happy fo r u to join up but i believe for insurance in the boats - on rivers, not just the pool - u have to have done the swim test. can someone check this out with anna? if they will let u join and the swim test isn't needed for rivers then i am more than happy for that to happen.

The swim test allows members to paddle with the club on open water. It really doesn't have anything to do with the ISE - for example, a member who only goes to pool sessions (or paddles on sheltered water) doesn't need to do the test. Don't forget this! Some ISE staff will say that potential or new members must do the test before they join the club or come to pool sessions - they are wrong! I've never heard anything about non-members on non-students not being allowed in SU vehicles - I think that idea was started by Roddy because he wanted to sit beside me in the hire vans. As for non-members using club equipment, well maybe it isn't allowed, but again, I don't remember anything in the constitution or safety regs that says so - so possibly at the captain's discretion. Membership runs from October to October (or when the first semester starts) - this is in the constitution. And thus endeth the sermon, and it was good. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

Actually, it's the ISE's policy that all people in the boats are competent swimmers and know how to escape an upturned boat... Though it's not something they actively enforce, it is something they assume everyone in the club, thus in the pool, and the boats, has done and thus are... capable of. For insurance, your right though.
(This is to the best of my understanding, and it isn't that big an issue, I could find out, but... its hardly worth bothering people with)

Could we move discussions like that into a new thread? Sorry but its confusing to filter the information of the trip and the membership ise thing. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) BTW. Is it still 5.30 @ Suzy and Stew?
